What To Consider With Your Aging-In-Place Bathroom

An aging-in-place bathroom remodeling project requires careful consideration of both current and future needs to ensure a safe, accessible, and comfortable environment. Here's what homeowners need to consider:

Accessibility: Consider the ease of access to the bathroom, including wide doorways, low thresholds, and layouts that accommodate mobility aids like walkers or wheelchairs.

Barrier-Free Showers: Opt for roll-in or walk-in showers without curbs, equipped with non-slip surfaces and grab bars for added safety.

Toilet Height: Installing toilets at a comfortable height, along with support bars, can make usage more manageable.

Sink and Vanity Design: Consider a sink design that allows for seated access if needed, with lever-handled faucets for easier operation.

Flooring Choices: Select non-slip, textured flooring materials that minimize the risk of falls, even when wet.

Adequate Lighting: Proper lighting is essential for visibility and safety. Consider adding adjustable lighting that can be tailored to different needs and times of the day.

Storage Accessibility: Design storage solutions at reachable heights, with easy-to-use handles and pull-out shelves where necessary.

Assistive Features: Think about adding features such as grab bars, shower seats, handheld showerheads, and other assistive devices that can be customized to individual needs.

Aesthetics and Comfort: An aging-in-place bathroom doesn't have to feel clinical. Consider finishes, colors, and fixtures that match the rest of the home's style while still providing the necessary functionality.

Professional Guidance: Consult with a contractor specializing in aging-in-place remodeling to ensure that all modifications meet current standards and guidelines.

Budget Consideration: Determine a realistic budget that includes not only immediate modifications but also potential future needs as mobility or health changes.

Long-Term Flexibility: Plan for flexibility in design that can accommodate changing needs over time, making it easier to update or adapt the space as required.

Compliance with Local Regulations: Ensure that the remodel complies with local building codes and regulations specific to accessibility.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability: Consider implementing energy-efficient fixtures and sustainable materials to enhance the overall comfort and efficiency of the space.

By considering these factors, homeowners can create a bathroom that not only meets their immediate needs but also anticipates future requirements, ensuring a comfortable and independent lifestyle for years to come. Collaborating with a knowledgeable contractor with experience in aging-in-place design can further help in tailoring the space to the individual's specific needs and preferences.

Aging In Place Bathroom Services Can Include

We can incorporate any or all of the following elements into your aging in place bathroom remodel.

Barrier-Free Showers: These allow easy access without stepping over a ledge, reducing the risk of falls. Options like roll-in or walk-in showers can be installed.

Grab Bars: Strategically placing grab bars near the toilet, shower, and bathtub adds support and stability.

Non-Slip Flooring: Installing slip-resistant flooring materials helps prevent falls, especially when wet.

Raised Toilet Seats: These make it easier to sit down and stand up, and can be paired with nearby grab bars for extra support.

Wheelchair Accessibility: Ensuring doorways and passages are wide enough for wheelchair or walker access and providing clear floor space for easy maneuvering.

Adjustable Shower Heads and Handheld Sprayers: These provide flexibility and ease of use while bathing.

Lever Handles on Faucets: Twist knobs can be hard to grip; lever handles are easier to operate.

Seated Shower Options: Installing a shower seat or bench provides a place to rest and adds safety during showering.

Accessible Storage: Lowering cabinets or adding pull-out shelves ensures easy access to daily necessities without reaching or bending.

Proper Lighting: Adequate and well-placed lighting helps with visibility and navigation.

Automatic or Touchless Faucets: These reduce the need to turn knobs, making water access easier.

Curbless Transition Between Rooms: Removing any door thresholds or making them very low helps in avoiding tripping hazards.

Emergency Call System: Installing an emergency alert system within reach provides a quick way to call for help if needed.

Height-Adjusted Counters and Sinks: These accommodate seated or standing users, improving comfort and accessibility.

Anti-Scald Devices: Installing these on faucets and showerheads ensures that the water doesn't get too hot, protecting sensitive skin.

Therapeutic Tub Options: Walk-in tubs or hydrotherapy options can add therapeutic benefits.

Clear Signage and Color Contrasts: For those with visual impairments, clear signs and color contrasts can help in identifying different bathroom areas and fixtures.

Voice-Controlled Technology: Integrating voice commands for lighting, water temperature, and other features can further ease the use of the bathroom.

Wide Bathtub Edges: These can allow for easier entry and exit from the bathtub.

Built-In Shower Niches: To reduce the need for bending or reaching, niches at the appropriate height can hold essential shower items.

Recently worked with LoneStar to remodel a bathroom and replace the kitchen counters and backsplash. We had our kitchen cabinets updated by painting them white. I am so glad we hired Lonestar Home Solutions and did not try to do it ourself! I knew what I wanted but I felt so much more confident I would get the right look with their help. I was impressed with the companies core values and professionalism and would definitely recommend them! Every part of the experience was smooth and timely. The staff are awesome people to work with! The painter that came to our house was very reliable, punctual, trustworthy, kept all areas clean, and clearly communicated his plans/schedule daily. He did an outstanding job on our cabinets! So go with these pros, you’ll be so glad you did!

My wife and I have used LoneStar Home Solutions on 3 different occasions to do work on our lakehouse in Seguin. The most recent job was the biggest - a kitchen and bath remodel. We have really appreciated the care that their staff puts into making sure the project turns out the way we want it. Alycia, the project coordinator and Roland the construction manager are both excellent. They answer questions, help with decisions, and most importantly, are easy to contact and follow through with their commitments. We would not hesitate to use them again and highly recommend them.

We recently had LoneStar Home Solutions do work on our kitchen and bathroom. Roland was in charge of the crew and Donna was also a supervisor on our job. This company did outstanding work for us. They were very respectful of our time when asking questions. Roland was always accessible to answer any questions that we had. Donna was also keeping us apprised of any changes to or updates in our billing so it was easy to keep up with the accounting part. The work crew were especially kind and they all knew their trade well. We got to know some of the work crew pretty well. Sparky, Johnny, and Victor all did great tile and painting work. The guy who installed the shower also did a great job. I would definitely recommend LoneStar to any of my family members and friends for any remodel job in the future. We are very pleased with the way our home turned out.
